How Your Md. Business Can Do Business in India

Following up on all of our work during the trade mission to India to open the doors of that country for Maryland businesses, I wanted to share with you invaluable information about how to do business in India.  Opening the market to Maryland businesses was one step, and now I want to make sure our businesses are equiped to move forward.

Prior to our mission to India, Vinod Jain,  President & CEO of the India-US World Affairs Institute and a professor at the Smith School of Business at the Univesity of Maryland, compiled an informative seminar that thought Maryland companies how to get a piece of the action in the growing subcontinental market.

Mr. Jain has kindly posted the materials from that seminar here, and I will share them with you below:

Doing Business in India

November 18, 2011

Pre-departure Seminar for:

Certified Trade Mission to India &
Maryland Governor's Trade Delegation to India
November 26 - December 3, 2011

As the world’s center of gravity shifts decisively in favor of emerging markets, competitive challenges and opportunities are being continually and dramatically transformed. And, no emerging market offers as much long-term opportunity for American multinationals as India does! Consider what India offers:

  • A growing middle class of over 300 million people, and the world’s largest population in the "Under 25” age group
  • The second fastest growing economy, and the 4th largest economy at PPP (purchasing power parity), in the world
  • The fastest growing telecom market in the world
- Average number of new mobile phone subscribers per day: 500,000
  • The 4th largest base of Internet users in the world
  • Second only to the United States in English-speaking scientific manpower
  • A well diversified industrial base in all core manufacturing and service industries
  • Over 100 global companies have R&D centers in India, and thousands more sell to India or otherwise leverage India’s resources to become more competitive themselves
  • U.S. merchandise exports to India grew at a compounded growth rate of 30% per year during 2004-2009, faster than U.S. exports to any other major country in the world.

All of this implies huge opportunities for American companies in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, specialty chemicals, information and communications technology, aviation, space, infrastructure, energy, and other sectors.

The Doing Business in India seminar offers an introductory look at the opportunities and challenges of doing business in India for participants in the Maryland Governor's Trade Delegation to India as well as for participants in the Certified Trade Mission to India, both being held concurrently.

Seminar Themes:

  • The context of doing Business in India... the opportunities
